An unfenced border with Kruger National Park. An abundance of wildlife, particularly the Big Five. The highest concentration of leopards of almost anywhere in the world. And limited vehicles, with the ability to venture off-road.

Guides here don’t just know the terrain—they know individual animals by name, their territory, their habits. That’s the difference between hoping for a sighting and knowing where to look. Add world-class lodges built to blend into the wild, and it’s easy to see why this is the reserve every other safari destination gets compared to.

When I was nine years old, my father handed me a N

When I was nine years old, my father handed me a Nikon film camera before I understood what a photograph could hold.

I didn’t know it, but decades later a camera would take me around the world—chasing light across the Mediterranean, following leopard tracks through the African wilderness. Learning that a photo is never just a pretty picture—it’s transportive. It shares a glimpse into a place, a feeling, a world you can almost step into. That’s the story a photo tells.

The world’s moved swiftly toward video, and I’ve learned to love it too. But nothing like what a single frame can hold. A leopard cub, still and watching, half-hidden in the grass. An elephant walking straight into the last light of the day. A beach in Greece, found by accident, and the best swim of the trip. Sundowners poured on the back of a Land Cruiser.

The list I wish I had before visiting Kefalonia for the first time…

-Rent a car and stay a full week—the island is bigger than you think

-Spend five nights in Sami or Agia Efimia (a central base to explore from), then stay the last two nights in the south and relax—Eliamos Villas Hotel or White Rocks Hotel are great options

-Go in September, not October—by early October the rain starts and shops begin to close for the season

-Visit Melissani Cave at midday, when the sun hits the water just right

-Take the boat taxi to Fteri beach—the hike down is steep

- Myrtos Beach is beautiful, but the currents are strong—be careful swimming here

-Don’t skip Assos—the colorful village is perfect for a morning coffee

-Fiskardo is where you want sunset drinks—Le Passage or the terrace at Theodora’s Cafe Bar

-Antisamos Beach is stunning for swimming, just know the fish literally bite

Set on Kefalonia, Fteri Beach is one of those rare places where water shifts from striking turquoise to cobalt blue beneath towering white cliffs. Accessible by water taxi or a steep hike in, it feels all the more special when you arrive.

Worth the journey.

Silently, out of the bush, a matriarch and her herd. A calf shadowing every step she took. We cut the engine. Nobody spoke.

This is the part nothing prepares you for—not the size of them, but the quiet and how small you feel.

The tent hardly felt like a tent. Canvas walls, warm wood, leather seating worn in just right, and a soaking tub open to the floodplain—completely private and entirely immersed in the wild.

Every early morning rise, every glass of wine on the deck, and every unexpected visitor became part of the stay—an elephant by our pool, a leopard outside our door. Here, the wildlife is never far away.

While everyone’s lining up for sunbeds at the beac

While everyone’s lining up for sunbeds at the beach clubs, Antiparos is quietly hiding some of the best beaches in Greece.

Nothing fighting for your attention but the view. No music blasting over the water. Just hidden coves, stretches of undisturbed sand, and water so clear you can count the rocks 10 feet down. My favorite is Faneromeni Beach — reached by dirt road, where the water shifts from turquoise to something deeper the further out you wade. Bring your own towel. Bring your own lunch. Nobody’s set up the easy version of the beach, and that’s exactly the point.
