There’s a particular kind of morning that only see

There’s a particular kind of morning that only seems to exist on Greek islands.

No one is rushing anywhere. The cat on the wall isn’t moving. The fisherman finished hours ago. And somewhere below, the sea is doing what it’s always done.

I had two coffees. I read four pages of the same paragraph. I watched the light change. I didn’t document any of it until it was already over.

Some places earn that.

Lunar white cliffs. Water in 20 shades of blue. Volcanic and otherworldly, this is Milos. Fishing boats bob in its horseshoe-shaped harbor carved from an ancient crater. Sea caves only reachable by boat. Beaches with no sunbeds, no vendors, no one telling you where to put your towel. Villages so quiet the only sound is the wind off the Aegean. The pace is unhurried and unfiltered. This is the Greece people are looking for.

By 8:00 am: two leopards cubs in the long grass, a pack of wild dogs fresh off a mill, and a family of elephants close to hear breathing.

Pittsburgh —> London Heathrow —> Cape Town
32 hours & worth every minute.

We took the overnight British Airways flight from Pittsburgh to Heathrow—we slept as much as we could on the 6.5 hour flight. The layover in London was long—over 12 hours. Honestly, that was the hardest part of the whole trip.

The London to Cape Town flight is the leg most people dread. But at 11 hours overnight, it’s the easiest part. 11 hours gave us enough time to properly rest between meal services.

How we made it work with a baby:
Extra hands. Paci or bottle for take off and landing. A new toy and/or soft photo book with familiar faces. Snacks—pouches are our go-to for flights.

Nothing prepares you for what an African safari actually sounds like. One moment it’s silence and distant thunder, the next it’s wild dogs chasing hyenas in the dark a few feet from where you’re sitting. No screen, no speaker, no documentary comes close. You have to feel it to believe it.

The tourist version: blue domes, infinity pools, Greek salad. The real version: ferries cancelled by wind, tavernas that need no sign, and ruins that shaped the entire Western world.

Here’s what to actually know before you go ⬇️

- Santorini in August is beautiful and absolutely everyone knows it. Go in May or September—same magic, half the people.

- If someone’s waving you into a restaurant, keep walking.

- Never book a flight home the day after a ferry. The meltemi wind doesn’t negotiate.

- The best sightseeing happens before 11am and after 5pm. Everything in between is for the shade, cold wine, and doing nothing particularly well.

- Athens is more than a layover. Stay a few days. Let it surprise you.

- Four islands in 10 days means you saw nothing. Pick two. Slow down. Leave wanting more.

- Greek salad is just the beginning. Order the octopus. Order the saganaki. The thing you can’t pronounce. Be brave.

I almost didn’t go. No one told me to—and maybe that’s exactly why it still feels like a secret worth keeping.

I spent a morning lost in Ischia Ponte with no plan—which turned out to be exactly the right one. A boat day that went nowhere in particular and everywhere that mattered. A grotto hidden so well in the cliff I nearly swam straight past it. And cocktails at Giardino Eden I didn’t want to finish, because finishing them meant admitting the night was ending.

Nobdoy here was in a hurry. Eventually I stopped being in one too. That’s what Ischia does. It doesn’t try to impress you. It quietly becomes your favorite place you almost didn’t go.
